The UAE leads the region as the most appealing wealth management location for high net-worth individuals (HNWIs) in the GCC. Study also finds that HNWIs from the GCC are optimistic on both the regional and global economic outlook.
The region’s HNWIs outline the UAE’s tax efficient system and sustainable economic model — one that strives to modernise itself regularly and introduce the latest technologies to build a knowledge economy — as the main reasons they choose the UAE as a wealth management destination.
A growing number of global fund managers are seen utilising the world-class financial infrastructure of the country to diversify their clients’ global portfolios. In comparative terms, the UAE is emerging as an efficient global wealth management hub. Over the past three years, a growing number of HNWIs have opted to keep their assets closer to home, which has also underwritten the evolution of the UAE’s regional wealth management hub status.
Increased confidence in the regional economy is evident in HNWIs’ strong endorsement for the GCC, and the UAE in particular, as an attractive wealth management location for HNWIs from the region and from the rest of the world. The majority of HNWIs based in the UAE manage their assets at home and nearly three quarters of GCC HNWIs rate the UAE as a top destination for wealth management in the region.
Current oil prices and upcoming high-profile events, such as Expo 2020 Dubai, were stated as reasons for optimism, whilst the economic impact of regional conflict is still creating a concern.
The development of the wealth management center is accompanied with active investment activities. There are two trends in investment activities in the region. One is the inflow of capital and technology, and the other is the outflow of funds searching for investment opportunities abroad.
For example, Abu Dhabi’s Aldar Real Estate Company announced on April 15 that, after fulfilling all regulatory procedures, the maximum foreign ownership ratio has been relaxed from the original 40% to 49%. The same company recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Hyperloop to build a new HyperloopTT Center in Aldar’s subsidiary Seih Al Sdeirah landbank at the junction of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

HNWIs also seek global investment opportunities in order to diversify their investment portfolios. Mubadala Real Estate recently stated that it will expand its international market through joint ventures and acquire commercial real estate. Its main destinations include major cities in Europe, Asia, and the United States, such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Berlin, Europe, Singapore, and Shanghai.
