This week, Saudi Arabia is welcoming 2.37 million pilgrims from all around the world, arrived for the five-day ritual, a religious duty to do once in a lifetime for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford the journey.

After the oil and gas industry, the pilgrimage is the country’s second most important industry. The Hajj and Umrah add an estimated $12 billion a year to Saudi’s GDP from worshippers’ lodging, transport, fees and gifts. By 2030 the government hopes to double the umrahpilgrims’number to 30 million.

Saudi Arabia has recently begun a third expansion of the Two Holy Mosques as well as modernizing and increasing the capacities of airports. The Makkah metro project will reinforce the network of transport system to facilitate access and help pilgrims perform their visits to the Holy Mosques and holy sites. Saudi has a fleet of more than 18,000 buses linked to a control system that tracks their paths, and a high-speed railway between Makkah and Madinah had been completed and being tested this year.The country has announced plans to set up a development company that plans to add 115 new buildings, 70,000 hotel rooms, 9,000 housing units and 360,000 square metres of commercial space to increase capacity for pilgrims and visitors to the holy sites.

Today Saudi Arabia is at the heart of the Arab and Islamic worlds and it aims to work on the restoration of national, cultural sites and strive to have them registered internationally to make them accessible to everyone and transmit the history of Islam. The Government will establish the world largest Islamic museum, build new historical sites, international hub for erudition and include a world-class library and research centers.
