The Saudi Energy Ministry said it was working with the Public Investment Fund (PIF), SoftBank and other relevant authorities to implement several large solar projects worth billions of dollars, with the goal of reaching 200 megawatts of solar power by 2030. A short-term pilot program is being implemented.

Abdulrahman Bin Abdulkareem, an adviser to the Minister of Energy Ministry, said at the 11th annual Arab Energy Conference that the kingdom is fighting to become a global leader in solar power and create $200 billion in investment opportunities.

A PIF official said that PIF will continue to work with SoftBank Vision Fund and other institutional cooperation, at the appropriate time to publish a series of billions-dollars solar projects. The kingdom is pursuing a comprehensive renewable energy strategy aimed at becoming a leading and reliable diversified supplier to the energy sector.

The department of energy has developed a comprehensive transformation plan for the power sector, covering three aspects:

1. Restructure the power market, enhance competitiveness and attract more investment from private enterprises;

2. Promote qualitative change in the energy hybrid and related technologies currently used in Saudi Arabia to increase production capacity from renewable energy sources (the most of which, except wind energy, come from solar energy);

3. Invest in all stages of value-added in the power sector.
